This beautiful embroidered banner is a souvenir from Mi-Carême (Mid-Lent) in Marseille, dated 1899. Mi-Carême is a traditional celebration that occurs halfway through Lent and often includes costumes, parades, and public festivities—similar in spirit to Carnival or Mardi Gras but held later. The fabric is gorgeous dark red silk with gold metallic thread. The center shield is padded with small floral ornaments and pins. Condition is very good. A rare and beautiful piece! Measures 25" x 12".
